A few months ago, I was invited to give a lecture at a center for coaches and therapists, focusing on how to upgrade their digital presence. After the talk, I met Sharon Calif Hasson, a parent counselor and family consultant who leads support groups for families of children with special needs. She approached me needing a digital home for her groups, but honestly admitted she had a history of bad experiences with them. This initial meeting turned into a beautiful journey of authentic landing page design, perfectly illustrating how the creative process really works when you dig deep to find the right voice.
With my 30 years of experience in graphic design, my intuition usually tells me right away if I will click with a potential client. With Sharon, I had a fantastic feeling. So, we decided to dive in and work together.
When Things Do Not Go According to Plan
Despite my great initial feeling, the process was far from smooth. The first draft did not land well at all. The colors were off, there were too many images, and the text was incredibly long. Something just was not working, but Sharon hesitated to cut any words because she felt everything had to be there. A sense of crisis hovered over the project. Deep down, however, I knew we would crack it and that she would ultimately get a page she truly loved.
I sent over a second draft. Usually, I give my clients time to review, gather their notes, and get back to me. This time, a lot of time passed. I only got a response when I finally reached out to check in. I could sense that Sharon was on the verge of giving up, fearing this landing page would just join her past failures.
Moving Beyond the Screen
While much of my daily communication with clients happens over email or messages, I decided this situation required a real voice conversation. I called her and simply listened.
I listened to the stress this project was causing her and the pressure of her upcoming group launch. I also listened to her disconnect from the copy, even though she had provided it herself.
"I don't speak like this," she told me. "I don't see myself in these words. When I talk to people about my groups, I touch their hearts, and I don't feel that here."
"Write exactly how you speak," I advised her. "Forget about marketing language. Just speak the text."
The breakthrough happened almost instantly. While on the phone, each of us in front of our computers, we rewrote the text together. We crafted copy that sounded just like her, words she truly connected with. As for the design, just as I knew from the start, she became incredibly proud of it. And she has every right to be. Sharon is a true gift to parents of children with special needs, and that gift finally shined through on her landing page.
The Final Result
Today, I follow Sharon's marketing efforts and see how she promotes her support groups and her beautiful mission. She is a powerhouse, and highly worth following. Thank you, Sharon, for not giving up and for giving me the opportunity to prove that this landing page would launch and do its job right alongside you.
For the rest of you, if you have a workshop, a service, or a product, and you need help seeing your true self reflected in your graphic materials, let's talk. Working together always creates a result that is greater than the sum of its parts.
